Deductible

The part of a covered loss the insured is responsible to pay before insurer benefits are payable under the policy.

Boundary: The amount, percentage, loss trigger, and application depend on the actual policy and claim facts.

Policy limit

A stated maximum associated with coverage under the policy, subject to its complete terms and any applicable sublimits.

Boundary: A displayed limit alone does not establish that a loss is covered or what amount is payable.

Exclusion

A cause, condition, property, person, or circumstance identified by the policy as not covered.

Boundary: Only the issued policy forms and endorsements show the exclusions that govern a particular policy.

Endorsement

An amendment that adds, removes, or changes terms of an insurance policy; it may also be called a rider.

Boundary: An endorsement title, proposal, or request does not prove the change was issued or effective.

Underwriting

The insurer's process for evaluating a submitted risk under its current rules and deciding whether and on what terms it may offer insurance.

Boundary: A website organizer, agent conversation, or application receipt is not an underwriting decision or eligibility result.

Insurance quote

A price-and-terms indication for stated information from an authorized insurance channel, subject to its stated status and conditions.

Boundary: A quote is not a binder or policy and does not prove that coverage is in force.

FAIR Plan and DIC

The California FAIR Plan may provide a limited basic property policy when regular-market coverage is not reasonably available, while a separate Difference in Conditions policy may address certain additional exposures.

Boundary: They are separate contracts. Neither this definition nor a combined price proves eligibility, placement, completeness, or coverage.
